Why your eyes are the window to your overall health

Celebrating World Sight Day with Barracloughs

Lady having an eye exam

World Sight Day: Thursday 8th October

As we mark World Sight Day, eye care organisations across the globe are uniting under a shared mission: raising awareness about vision loss, highlighting the necessity of preventable care, and encouraging everyone to prioritise their sight.

At Barracloughs, we believe that taking care of your eyes is one of the most vital steps you can take for your long-term health and well-being. A routine eye examination is far more than a simple check to see whether you need glasses - it is a comprehensive assessment of your ocular and systemic health.

Eye health in the UK: the current picture

Understanding the national landscape underlines why routine check-ups are so critical:

  • Over 2 million people in the UK live with sight loss severe enough to impact their daily lives.
  • 1 in 5 people will experience sight loss in their lifetime.
  • Every day, 250 people in the UK begin to lose their sight - the equivalent of one person every six minutes.
  • According to the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) and the Association of Optometrists (AOP), around 50% of sight loss is avoidable if detected and managed early enough through regular eye examinations.

What can an eye examination reveal?

During a routine examination, our optometrists and dispensing opticians look beyond your prescription. Because the retina is the only place in the body where blood vessels and nerve tissue can be observed directly without invasive procedures, an eye test acts as an early warning system for both ocular and general health conditions.

Systemic health conditions detected during an examination

  • High blood pressure (hypertension): Changes or narrowing in the blood vessels at the back of the eye can reveal unmanaged high blood pressure before symptoms appear elsewhere.
  • Diabetes: Diabetic retinopathy causes micro-aneurysms or bleeding in the retinal vessels, often revealing early-stage diabetes.
  • High cholesterol: Fatty deposits can form as a visible ring around the outer edge of the cornea (arcus senilis) or as small blockages within retinal blood vessels.
  • Brain tumours & raised intracranial pressure: Swelling of the optic nerve head (papilloedema) can provide an early indicator of increased pressure within the skull.
  • Autoimmune disorders: Conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and multiple sclerosis can present as chronic inflammation inside the eye (uveitis or optic neuritis).
Eye health conditions: treatable vs. untreatable

Regular examinations allow us to monitor and intervene before irreversible vision loss occurs.

Conditions that can be managed or treated
  • Cataracts: Clouding of the natural crystalline lens inside the eye. Cataracts are highly treatable through routine, safe surgical procedures that restore clarity.
  • Glaucoma: Known as the "silent thief of sight," glaucoma typically causes no early pain or warning signs. It damages the optic nerve due to fluid pressure build-up. While lost vision cannot be restored, early detection allows us to manage pressure with daily eye drops or minor procedures to prevent further loss.
  • Diabetic retinopathy: Manageable when caught early through blood sugar control, laser therapy, or targeted injections.
  • Refractive errors & binocular vision issues: Common conditions like short-sightedness, long-sightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia are simply managed with prescribed lenses or vision therapy.
  • Dry eye disease: Chronic discomfort can be effectively managed with tailored lid hygiene, artificial tears, and lifestyle adjustments. Learn more here.
Conditions that are untreatable (irreversible)

While some eye conditions cannot be cured or reversed, early detection remains critical to slowing progression, preserving remaining vision, and accessing low-vision aids.

  • Advanced age-related macular degeneration (dry AMD): Dry AMD involves the gradual breakdown of light-sensitive cells in the macula, leading to central vision loss. Although there is currently no direct cure to reverse damage, early diagnosis allows us to recommend dietary changes, specialised UV protection, and visual aids to help maintain quality of life.
  • Advanced glaucoma damage: Any nerve fibre loss that has already occurred from untreated glaucoma is permanent and cannot be restored.
  • Retinitis pigmentosa: A group of rare genetic disorders affecting the retina that causes gradual loss of peripheral and night vision. While currently incurable, monitoring allows support through assistive technology and lifestyle adaptations.
The Barracloughs difference: enhanced sight examinations with OCT

To ensure our patients receive the highest standard of care, we offer an Enhanced Sight Examination including Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT).

What is OCT?
OCT technology acts like an ultrasound for the eye, using light waves to render a 3D cross-sectional scan of your retina. Standard retinal photography only captures the surface of the eye, whereas OCT allows our optometrists to look beneath the surface, layer by layer.

This enables us to detect conditions like macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic eye disease up to four years earlier than traditional diagnostic methods - often before you notice any change in your vision.

  • Private appointments: OCT scanning is seamlessly included as part of your comprehensive care package.
  • NHS appointments: Patients eligible for NHS sight tests can easily upgrade their appointment to include an OCT scan for a modest fee, giving you total peace of mind.
