Tom Joins Us for a Week

Over the years we have offered work experience placements to a handful of different pupils wishing to explore what goes on during a typical day in the opticians. When Tom, who has a very keen interest in graphic design and media, approached us asking if we would be happy to offer him a work experience placement, we jumped at the chance.

We have always managed all of our graphic design, advertising, social media, website etc. in-house from our Bexhill head office, so this was an ideal opportunity to show Tom what's involved with designing artwork for promotions and adverts online and offline.

We see work experience as a very important element of the journey towards preparing for the working years to come - it shows just how much can be achieved in a week, or even in a single day, albeit a longer day than they're probably used to. We've participated in many careers fairs over time as well, explaining to students all the various areas of the optical industry, from the clinical side in the consulting rooms to the more fashion orientated side of the business, selecting frames to best suit a customer's style, skin tone, hair colour etc. Tom struggled to find a placement before contacting us, which is a huge shame as businesses should embrace those looking to learn, where possible, so long as they have the capacity to show students how things are done.

One of the major benefits of work experience is that it highlights how teamwork plays a huge part behind the scenes of any business. We felt it was important for Tom to understand that at times, working as a team means mucking in with other menial tasks which are outside of your usual remit. Tom helped to move new deliveries of new branded products into our storage unit - plus it's no bad thing to have a break from the screen and shift some boxes every now and again, always remember to care for those eyes!

Tom learned the importance of strong company branding and how to adhere to guidelines, ensuring a consistent appearance regardless of where a business advertises. We looked at other local examples of company branding and advertising, we discussed design ideas, posted social media ads and Tom was also quizzed... regularly! Tom was shown how to use a variety of professional image editing tools and came up with some very creative ideas.

We hope Tom walked away last week with some new skills under his belt and new knowledge of what it's like to design images for digital use and for print. We thoroughly enjoyed having him as part of the team that week, and know for sure that he'll be a valuable asset to any company lucky enough to employ this creative young lad in the future!
